View from Tarantellen, the spider mountain of Spitsbergen, to the South East
(real picture,
no photo shopping).
No, I am not going to do any sky-diving as may look at this picture. The picture has been taken just at the right moment.
The area around Tarantellen will be the place where I will come back to many times during 2010. I hope to make many special
full moon pictures of Tarantellen in the darkness months. I will also move around to see the moon through one of the two
big holes in the Tarantellen.
Tarantellen in wintertime.
Although Spitsbergen is not the perfect place to see the Northern lights, I hope to make some Northern lights
pictures with the Tarantellen mountain on it. I stay there long enough so there is a chance that I might see those Northern
lights.
View with a telephoto lens towards Tarantellen.
Tarantellen is situated on a mountainridge at 700 meters a.s.l. See the different pictures on this page.
The view to the south-west is blocked by the big Mountain Gizehfjellet which is nearby. To the west and north-west
you can see many mountainpeaks which might give some nice sunsets. The view to the north, east and almost to the south is
totally free. It would be very special to see the sun come back at the end at the dark season. The first sunrise will be
in the south at midday, allthough sunset will follow very soon at these first days. Depending on weather conditions this
will give some nice colours in the sky.
Summerview of Tarantellen, with campsite under the right tower.
I will run up many times to the Tarantellen mountainridge during the year to make pictures at the same places to see the
changing in the landscape. Depending on snowconditions I have several options for going down, this all depends on the
snow conditions. I can:
Walk down with or without crampons.
Ski up and ski down.
Slide down, using an ice-axe as brake.
With enough powder snow on that hill I can go down on my riverboard!!
Even with enough new snow on it, this mountain hill is to steep to go down in a kayak. But I can do the lower parts
on the glacier. Maybe my polarbear will start from the top, it will be a heavy job to get the kayak on the Tarantellen
mountainridge.
View from Tarantellen to the North: In front Hoglandlake with its many iceblocks,
in the middle the big Mittag-Leffler glacier and at the end Weidefjorden.
View from the Mittag-Leffler glacier towards Gizehfjellet and Tarantellen.
On the last picture you can see Tarantellen on the right and the big mountain Gizehfjellet in the middle.
My camp, where I come back to many times, will be on the glacier under Gizehfjellet.
During nice weather I will camp some days on the mountainridge of Tarantellen.
