August 2011:I couldn't update my website when I was out in the field.
I did have some mobile fone connection on the coll between Sfinksen and Gizeh Fjellet but the connection was not stable enough to update my website.
Beside the pictures you see here below, I did many many other things.
I digged out my last depot at July 3rd.
I had a 2 days "fight" with a small river to save my depot at the fjord side.
Very high water (due to melting snow) with rolling rocks attacks my depot.
I placed many tree's (Russian wood) and thousand kilo's of rocks to defend my depot.
It did work and my depöt was not washed out by the river. The river did move many rocks and washed out many ground.
I will never forget the 10 th of July. It was raining very heavely for more then 12 hours at my basecamp.
I filmed a new small mudd stream (from Luxor Fjellet) which started above my basecamp.
The mudd stream became bigger and bigger and moved many big rocks.
The rocks ended in the snow above my basecamp and the water of the muddstream passed my tent at 15 meter!!!
That was close.........
In Longyearbyen it had not rain that much.
The weeks after I saw many changes in the landscape. Many ground has been washed out, new mudd streams are still moving ground.
Places around Hoglandlake, Alandslake, Manchester glacier, Ragner lake has changed.
Comparing to 2007 the Mittag Leffler glacier has also changed at some places.
In July I did paddle the Alandselva from the Manchester glacier. I named it the "Chocolate river", the water looks like chocolate.
I didn't paddle the first part, which is up to class 5, I started lower where the river calms down to class 3. It is a "get in and go" river, no place
to stop for the first 2 km. The views towards the mountains is very special from your kayak. I paddle about 5km and filmed the most part.
The months April, May and June did have many sunny days.
July and August was warm but with rain and snow, some sun and many "white out" days on the glacier.
The bike generator was a nice thing to have during those "white out" days.
It keeps me warm and fit. 15 minutes on the bike generator is enough to stay warm for the next hours.
With the bike generator I can charge one of my 40ah accu which can be used for charging my electric equipment.
Beside the bike generator I also use two 50 watt solar panels. One solar panel is at my basecamp and the other one is
at my depot at the fjord.
It is now August 20th. At August 18th I have been picked up by a boat to bring back the most of my equipment to Longyearbyen.
I am going back to my basecamp tomorrow (August 21th).
I will be picked up by a big zodiac on a nice day (hopefully) during the last week of September.
My bike generator "the Tarangator" at my basecamp¨on the Mc Whae glacier.
Close up picture of the bike generator.
The winterplace of the polarbear in an icecave at Hoglandlake .
Camping in an icecave at the Mittag Leffler glacier.
Camp at Hoglandlake close to the Mittag Leffler glacier.
Camp at the coll between Sfinksen (the mountain you see) and Gizeh Fjellet, beautiful view over Billefjorden.
Transporting the kayak and other equipment to Alandslake in wet snow.
Camp on Tarantelryggen with amazing view, the tent is completely digged in the snow.
The big yellow dome tent with an igloo, look at the "door/window" in that igloo.
Sea kayaking over the sea-ice in Billefjorden. It was the last day with ice in the fjord (22 june 2011).
Polarbears on vacation in Hawai.
Doing a roll on a small lake in Alands Valley.
Crossing a small glacier river with 2 pulks (sledges) and a kayak.
